哲学从逃离时间到认真对待时间

哲学家只是在放弃了认识永恒的希望之后,才开始专注于未来的图景。哲学起初是一种逃离的努力:逃进一个什么都不会改变的世界。最早的哲学家认为,过去的流变与未来的流变之间,差别小到可以忽略。只有当他们开始认真对待时间,他们对此世未来的希望,才逐渐取代了他们对另一个世界的求知欲。

汉斯·布鲁门贝格(Hans Blumenberg)曾提出,欧洲哲学家在中世纪末期开始对永恒失去兴趣,而十六世纪,也就是布鲁诺和培根的世纪,正是哲学家开始尝试认真对待时间的时期。布鲁门贝格大概是对的,不过这种对永恒的冷淡,要到十九世纪才完全自觉。正是在这个世纪,西方哲学在黑格尔的旗帜下,不仅对柏拉图式逃离时间的努力,而且对康德式为时间性现象寻找非历史的可能性条件的方案,都提出了详尽而明确的怀疑。也正是在这个世纪,多亏了达尔文,人类得以把自己看成与自然界其余部分连续的存在,看成彻头彻尾时间性的、偶然的存在,而且并不因此有什么损失。

黑格尔与达尔文的合力,把哲学从「我们是什么」这个问题,推向了「我们可以尝试成为什么」这个问题。这一转变改变了哲学家的自我形象。柏拉图,乃至康德,都希望站在一个外部立场上审视自己所处的社会与文化,那是一个必然而不变的真理的立场。后来的哲学家则逐渐放弃了这种希望。只要我们认真对待时间,我们哲学家就得放弃沉思优先于行动的成见。我们得同意马克思的说法:我们的工作是帮助让未来不同于过去,而不是去认识未来必然与过去共有什么。我们得从哲学家与祭司、圣贤共享的那种角色,转向一种更像工程师或医生的社会角色。祭司和圣贤可以自己定议程,而当代哲学家和工程师、医生一样,必须先弄清楚客户需要什么。

从祭司圣贤到工程师医生

柏拉图发明哲学,恰恰是为了逃离一时的需要,超越政治。因此,认真对待时间,认真对待黑格尔和达尔文,常常被说成是放弃哲学,或者终结哲学。但放弃柏拉图和康德,并不等于放弃哲学。因为对于柏拉图和康德在做什么,我们能给出比他们自己更好的描述。我们可以说,他们是在回应一种需要:社会与文化的变迁让一种人类自我形象过时了,需要一种新的、更能适应变迁结果的自我形象来取代它。我们还可以补一句:只要社会与文化的变迁不停止,哲学就不可能终结。因为这些变迁会逐渐让我们对自身及处境的大尺度描述过时,从而催生对新语言的需要,好用它来构造新的描述。

只有一个没有政治的社会,也就是由僭主统治、由他们阻止社会与文化变迁发生的社会,才不需要哲学家。在没有政治的社会里,哲学家只能做国教的祭司。而在自由社会里,永远需要哲学家的服务,因为这样的社会从不停止变化,从不停止让旧词汇过时。

杜威:哲学是新旧信念的中介

约翰·杜威(John Dewey)和马克思一样,对黑格尔和达尔文同等敬重。他提出,在抛弃柏拉图与康德共有的那种自我形象,即认识无条件的、非历史的必然性的认知者形象的过程中,我们应当转而把哲学看成源于他所说的「继承下来的制度与格格不入的当代倾向之间的冲突」。杜威说,某些东西一旦被表述成形而上学的区分,就显得矫饰而空洞;可一旦与社会信念和理想的斗争联系起来,就变得意义重大。

杜威认真看待黑格尔那句名言:哲学只是在一种生活形式衰老之后,才在灰色上涂抹灰色。在杜威看来,这意味着哲学永远寄生于文化与社会其他领域的发展,永远是对这些发展的回应。杜威把黑格尔对历史性的强调,理解为这样一个主张:哲学家不该试图充当社会与文化的先锋,而应甘心在过去与未来之间做中介。哲学家的工作是把旧信念和新信念编织在一起,让它们彼此配合而不是互相干扰。和工程师、医生一样,哲学家的用处在于解决特定情境中出现的特定问题,也就是过去的语言与未来的需要发生冲突的那些情境。

三个冲突:新科学、达尔文、大众民主

让我举三个这类冲突的例子。

第一个例子,是需要把披着基督教神学语言外衣的道德直觉,与十七世纪出现的新科学世界图景调和起来。在那个世纪及其后的一个世纪,欧洲哲学家试图找到一种办法,把道德直觉看成某种不同于神明命令的东西。这位神明超越时间,却又具有人的形象,而这样一位神明的存在,很难与伽利略和牛顿提供的机械化世界图景相容。从这个角度看,莱布尼茨、康德和黑格尔的体系,都是关于如何调和基督教伦理与哥白尼、伽利略科学的种种建议:如何让这两样好东西互不干扰。

第二个例子,是达尔文的提议:把人看成更复杂的动物,而不是多了一种叫做「理智」或「理性灵魂」的额外成分的动物。这个提议不仅动摇了逃离时间的希望,也动摇了「认识实在」与「适应实在」之间的区分。达尔文让哲学家意识到,他们必须重新描述人类活动,而这种描述不得要求生物演化中出现任何突然的断裂。这意味着要以一种模糊自然与精神之分的方式,重新描述生物演化与文化演化的关系。而自然与精神的区分,是西方从柏拉图到黑格尔的所有人(除了霍布斯、休谟这类偶尔出现的怪人)都视为理所当然的。

达尔文关于人类起源的解释给哲学家带来了新的要求,而这些要求,又与第三个哲学之外的新事物所带来的要求交织在一起,这就是大众民主的兴起。和前两个不同,这第三个新事物来自政治经验,而不是科学上的巧思。大众民主,也就是把「凡受政治决定影响的人都应有权影响这些决定」这一提议在实践中成功实现,危及了柏拉图式的区分:一边是智者对真理的理性追求,一边是众人所特有的激情的流变。再加上达尔文对人与动物之分的模糊化,大众民主的实践便让一整串进一步的区分变得可疑:认知与非认知,理性与激情,逻辑与修辞,真理与效用,哲学与诡辩。大众民主的成功交给哲学家的任务之一,就是用「自由共识与强制共识」这一政治差异,而不是用「无条件者与有条件者」这一形而上学区分,来重新表述这些区分。

杜威与罗素:手段之争而非目的之争

杜威、柏格森和怀特海的体系,都是在尝试与达尔文达成和解:保留旧二元论中有用的部分,同时用彻底时间化的语言重新表述它们。罗素和胡塞尔的做法,则是在先天的(a priori)哲学问题与后天的(a posteriori)经验问题之间划一条线,把文化切分开来,这是另一种尝试。罗素和胡塞尔想通过这种切分,让民主文化对先验哲学来说变得安全,从而让达尔文与康德无关。

这样看来,杜威与罗素之间,或者柏格森与胡塞尔之间的对比,不是两种准确再现我们非历史的本性与处境的努力之间的对比,而是两种在历史时代之间做中介、调和新旧真理的努力之间的对比。杜威和罗素同样忠于牛顿力学、达尔文生物学和大众民主。再者,两人都不认为哲学能为这三样东西中的任何一样提供基础。两人都认为,问题在于如何改变熟悉的说话方式,好不再预设一种与这三种文化发展相冲突的形而上学或形而上学心理学。他们的分歧在手段而不在目的:为了保留柏拉图和康德工作中有用的成分,抛弃已经过时的部分,究竟需要多彻底地改变柏拉图和康德对自己的描述。

去专业化与反基础主义的陷阱

不过,如果我们采纳杜威关于哲学家任务的图景,我们就得同时放弃马克思主义关于科学与意识形态的区分,以及罗素和胡塞尔所使用的先天与后天的区分。更一般地说,我们得放弃一切让哲学保持自主的努力,放弃哲学家开始认真对待时间之前人们所设想的那种自主性。杜威可以(罗素则不能)接受洛克的提议:哲学家的角色是打下手的小工,清除过去的垃圾,为未来的建构腾出地方。但我想杜威也会承认,哲学家偶尔可以把这种清洁工的角色与先知的角色结合起来。培根和笛卡尔身上都有这种结合:两人都试图清除亚里士多德式的垃圾,为乌托邦未来的图景腾出空间。同样,杜威让哲学摆脱康德的努力,哈贝马斯让哲学从他所谓「意识哲学」中解脱的努力,德里达把哲学从他所谓「在场形而上学」中解放出来的努力,都与对一个完全民主的社会的预言交织在一起,而这种解脱将加速那个社会的到来。

不再操心哲学的自主性,意味着(除了别的以外)不再想在哲学问题与政治、宗教、审美或经济问题之间划出清晰漂亮的界线。除非我们哲学家能接受某种程度的去专业化,除非我们对「什么时候在做哲学、什么时候不在做」这个问题养成某种漫不经心的态度,否则哲学既无法扮演杜威赋予它的那个谦逊而有益的角色,也无法成功地认真对待时间。我们得停止自我戏剧化,不仅要停止黑格尔和马克思那种宏大的自我戏剧化,连罗素和胡塞尔那种不那么壮观的自我戏剧化也得停止。如果我们不再把自己的职业习惯等同于理性思考或清晰思考,我们就更容易承认杜威的论点:我们这门学科和工程学、医学一样,没有能力自己定议程。承认这一点,会帮助我们摆脱这样一种想法:科学或政治的发展需要哲学基础;对文化新事物的合法性,必须悬置判断,直到我们哲学家宣布它们是真正合乎理性的。

然而,专门从事反基础主义的哲学家,常常把自己看成革命者,而不是垃圾清扫工或有远见的人。于是,不幸的是,他们变成了先锋主义者。他们开始说,在我们的乌托邦希望实现之前,我们的语言和文化需要彻底改变,而我们哲学家恰恰就是发起这种改变的人。这种对彻底性的坚持,是倒过来的基础主义:它坚持认为,哲学信念不变,任何东西都不会变。

三种危险:先锋、经院、沙文

马克思和海德格尔共有的这种哲学先锋主义,这种要让万物更新的冲动,这种坚持除非一切都变否则什么都不能变的态度,在我看来是当代哲学内部应当加以遏制的倾向之一。

另一种倾向,正如我已经暗示的,是走向专业化的冲动:通过收窄学科范围来保持它的完整与自主。每当你听到一位哲学家说他打算把自己限制在他所谓「哲学问题」上,仿佛存在一份众所周知的问题清单,一份从天上传下来、代代相传而完好无损的清单,你就能看到这种防御姿态。这种逃离时间与变化、忘掉黑格尔、重新归附柏拉图和康德的努力,目前在英语世界的哲学共同体中,也就是自称从事「分析哲学」的那个共同体中,相当普遍。希拉里·普特南(Hilary Putnam)说得对,我认为,大量分析哲学已经堕落为哲学教授之间因直觉不同而起的争吵。普特南说,这些直觉所涉及的问题,既无实践意义,也无精神意义。我认为他说得对。在这个领域里,调和既有直觉的欲望,取代了另一项任务:追问表述这些直觉的词汇是否仍然有用。这种拒绝追问,反过来又强化了一种信念:哲学问题是永恒的,因此适合由一门独立于社会与文化变迁而运作的专业化学科来研究。这样的拒绝和这样的信念,正是哲学史上那个我们如今称为「衰颓的经院哲学」的时期的特征。每当哲学家开始以本学科的自主性自豪,这种经院主义的危险就会重现。

正如英语世界的哲学变得过度专业化,非英语世界的哲学则常常变得野心过大、流于先锋主义。在海德格尔和福柯这样的作者那里,这种哲学提供的是彻底批判,就像马克思对所谓十九世纪资产阶级文化所提供的那种批判。这类批判往往以马克思主义者早已让我们熟悉的那种轻蔑与不屑的口吻发出。

不过,对分析哲学的经院气息和先锋派非分析哲学的不切实际的高调,两者都不信任,却导致了第三种危险,即沙文主义。偶尔你会听到哲学家说,自己的国家需要一种独特的哲学,每个民族都需要一种自己的哲学来表达自己独一无二的经验,就像它需要自己的国歌和国旗一样。小说家和诗人确实可以有益地创造一种民族文学,让一个国家的青年能在其中找到关于自己国家如何诞生、如何发展的叙事。但我怀疑哲学家有任何类似的任务可做。我们哲学家擅长的是在民族之间架桥,是世界主义的事业,而不是讲沙文主义的故事。我们一旦讲起这种故事,往往讲得很糟,就像黑格尔和海德格尔讲给德国人听的那些故事:关于德国与某种超自然力量之间的优越关系的故事。

诚实中间人与非自满的世界主义

我希望我们这些哲学教授能找到办法,避开全部三种诱惑:把哲学看成变革的推动者而不是调解者的革命冲动,退缩到学科边界之内的经院冲动,以及沙文主义的冲动。在我看来,如果我们采纳杜威对我们工作的理解,把它看成调和旧与新,把我们的职业功能看成在代际之间、在文化活动的各个领域之间、在各种传统之间做一个诚实的中间人,我们也许就能做到。

然而,这种调解活动不能以那种自满的世界主义的方式来进行。那种世界主义安于现状,并以文化多样性或多元文化主义的名义为现状辩护。这种自满的世界主义,当年对斯大林主义审慎而恭敬地保持沉默,如今对宗教原教旨主义,对仍然统治着世界大部分地区的双手沾血的独裁者,依然审慎而恭敬地保持沉默。这种世界主义最可鄙的形式是这样解释的:人权对欧洲中心的文化来说固然很好,但对其他文化的需要而言,一支高效的秘密警察,加上唯命是从的法官、教授和记者,再加上高效的刑讯者,才是更合适的安排。

与这种虚伪而自欺的世界主义相对的,是另一种世界主义:它对一种具体的世界主义的人类未来有清晰的图景,那就是一个遍及全球的民主政体,一个全球社会,在其中,世界另一端发生的酷刑,或者一所大学、一家报纸被关闭,和发生在本国一样令人愤慨。这个未来的世界城邦,在非政治事务上可以一如既往地多元、异质。但在这个乌托邦的未来里,文化传统将不再影响政治决定。在政治上只会有一种传统:对富人和强者利用穷人和弱者的可预见的企图保持持续的警惕。文化传统永远不得凌驾于约翰·罗尔斯(John Rawls)的差别原则之上,永远不得用来为机会不平等开脱。

全球民主乌托邦与温和说服

如果这样一个乌托邦真的到来,我们哲学家在创造它的过程中大概会扮演一个边缘的、次要的角色。正如圣托马斯·阿奎那必须在《旧约》与亚里士多德之间做中介,康德必须在《新约》与牛顿之间做中介,柏格森和杜威必须在柏拉图与达尔文之间做中介,甘地和尼赫鲁必须在洛克、密尔的语言与《薄伽梵歌》的语言之间做中介,将来也得有人在这种乌托邦政治的平等主义语言与许多不同文化传统的公然不平等的语言之间做中介。得有人温和而耐心地把平等主义政治编织进那些传统的语言里,而这些传统坚持区分理性的或受神启的智者与混乱迷茫的众人。得有人说服我们放弃一种习惯:把政治决定建立在「像我们这样的人」(典范意义上的人)与「可疑的人类个案」的差别之上,后者比如外国人、异教徒、贱民、女人、同性恋者、混血儿和残疾人。这些区分内嵌于我们的文化传统之中,因而也内嵌于我们的道德审议词汇之中。而乌托邦不会到来,除非世界各民族被说服,相信这些区分无关紧要。

这种说服将是渐进的、温和的、零敲碎打的,而不是革命的、一揽子的。但这种温和而渐进的说服是可能的。因为即使大众民主是一项特属于欧洲的发明,民主的世界城邦这一理念却能在世界各地引起共鸣。在每一种文化传统内部,都有这样的故事:众人比智者看得更远,传统所认可的残酷让位于低微者感受到的不义,高高在上者向底层的正义感屈服。在每一种这样的传统内部,都有与受鄙视群体通婚而美满的故事,都有古老仇恨被耐心与礼让化解的故事。每一种文化,无论多么狭隘,都包含可以被编织进遍及全球的民主政治共同体的乌托邦图景的材料。设想用强力而非说服来推行民主,设想强迫男男女女去自由,是自相矛盾的;但设想说服他们去自由,并不自相矛盾。如果我们哲学家还有什么功能的话,那就是这种说服。

从真理的仆人到民主的仆人

从前,我们比现在更多地思考永恒,更少地思考未来。那时我们把自己定义为真理的仆人。但近来我们较少谈论真理(truth),较多谈论诚实(truthfulness);较少谈论把真理带给权力,较多谈论让权力保持诚实。我认为这是一个健康的转变。真理是永恒而持久的,但你很难确定自己已经抓住了它。诚实和自由一样,是时间性的、偶然的、脆弱的,但你一遇见它们就能认出来。事实上,我们最珍视的自由,就是彼此坦诚相待而不因此受罚的自由。

在一个彻底时间化的思想世界里,一个对确定性和不变性的希望已经完全消失的世界里,我们哲学家会把自己定义为这种自由的仆人,民主的仆人。这样看待自己,有助于我们避开先锋主义、沙文主义和经院主义的危险。这也就是同意杜威的说法:哲学只能提供假说,而这些假说的价值,仅在于它们能让人的心灵对周遭的生活更加敏感。在一个完全时间化的思想世界里,对这种敏感有所贡献,对一门学术学科来说,将是和对知识有所贡献同样体面的目标。
